The Role of Tears
Tears are essential for eye comfort. Without them, your eyes can feel gritty, irritated, and uncomfortable.
Your tears contain 3 key components that support your eye comfort:
- Mucus
- Water
- Oils
If your tears lack any of these ingredients, you could experience dry eye symptoms. Our role is to determine what’s affecting your tear quantity or quality and address the issue with personalized strategies.
Types of Dry Eye
There are two types of dry eye you can experience: evaporative dry eye and aqueous-deficient dry eye. Although both types can cause similar symptoms, the root cause of each is different, requiring unique treatment approaches.
These are common symptoms of both types of dry eye:
- Eye redness
- Watery eyes
- Burning or stinging sensations
- Blurry vision
- The feeling of having something in your eye
We can help determine which type of dry eye you might have when you come in for a dry eye exam.
Evaporative Dry Eye
Evaporative dry eye happens when your tears lack the necessary oils to prevent them from evaporating too quickly.
These oils are produced by your meibomian glands, located along the edges of your eyelids. Meibomian gland dysfunction is a common cause of evaporative dry eye.
Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye
Aqueous-deficient dry eye happens when your tears lack the water content they need to keep your eyes hydrated.
This type of dry eye often occurs if you’re taking certain medications or have conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome.
Identifying Associated Dry Eye Conditions
Dry eye is often associated with two conditions: meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis.
When you visit us for a dry eye appointment, we’ll look for any concerns associated with your symptoms to develop a personalized treatment strategy.
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
Meibomian gland dysfunction happens when the meibomian glands, located along the edges of your eyelids, either produce too little oil or become blocked and stop producing oil altogether.
This can disrupt the balance of your tear film and lead to dry eye symptoms. It’s one of the most common causes of dry eye.
Blepharitis
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid.
It can be caused by irritation from bacteria or allergies, and symptoms include redness around the eyes, itchy eyelids, flaking skin, and a burning sensation.
